How to Prepare Your Home Before You Travel (So You Come Home to Peace, Not Chaos)

With spring break right around the corner, many families are getting ready for travel. Suitcases are coming out, itineraries are being finalized, and the excitement of a getaway is starting to build! But while most of us spend time planning what to pack, we often forget to think about how we’re leaving our home behind.
As a professional home organizer and a mom who travels with my family, I’ve learned that how you prepare your home before you leave can completely change how you feel when you return. In fact, I just got back into the country after traveling for over a week with my family. Between delayed flights, cancellations, and long hours of travel, we were exhausted by the time we finally walked through our front door. And in that moment, I was so thankful for something I’ve been doing for years: prepping our home before we leave.
Because instead of coming home to clutter, dishes, and chaos… we came home to calm. And after a long travel day, that feeling is priceless. If you want to leave for vacation with peace of mind and come home feeling the same way, here are the simple things I always do before traveling.
1. Start With the Basics: Clean the Essentials
Before you even zip up your suitcase, tackle a few key areas in your home:
• Wash and put away dishes
Coming home to a clean sink makes a huge difference.
• Take out all trash and recycling
Especially if you’ll be gone more than a few days.
• Run one last load of laundry
Fresh clothes before you go and less chaos when you get back.
These small resets take very little time but make your home feel instantly lighter when you walk back in.
2. Do a Quick “Travel Tidy” Around the House
You don’t need a deep clean before every trip, but a quick reset throughout your main spaces can make your return so much more enjoyable.
Spend a few minutes in each room:
• Put away stray items
• Fold blankets and reset pillows
• Clear clutter from countertops
• File or recycle loose papers and mail
Think of this as leaving your home the way you’d like to come back to it.
3. Check the Fridge
One of the easiest things to forget before leaving is food.
Before a trip I always:
• Toss anything that will spoil while we’re away
• Use up leftovers
• Give the fridge a quick wipe if needed
Nothing ruins the calm of coming home faster than discovering spoiled food.
4. Plan for the First 10 Minutes When You Get Home
This is one of my favorite organizing tricks.
Before leaving, I mentally plan the first few things I’ll do when we return so the transition home is easy.
For me that usually means:
• Unpack suitcases right away
• Start a quick load of laundry
• Plan and order groceries for the week (if I haven't already done this while waiting at the airport for the flight to take off)
After hours of traveling, having a simple plan keeps things from piling up.
Why This Matters (Especially After Travel Chaos)
Our recent trip reminded me exactly why I do this.
After flight cancellations and a very long travel day, we walked through the door exhausted. But because the house had been prepped before we left, we didn’t have to deal with clutter, spoiled food, or a pile of chores waiting for us.
Instead, we walked into a space that felt calm. And when you’re tired from traveling, especially with kids, that feeling is everything.
A Peaceful Home Makes Travel Better
Preparing your home before a trip isn’t about perfection. It’s about creating a soft landing for yourself when you come back. A few small habits before you leave can turn your return home from stressful to peaceful and that’s something every traveler deserves!
